Welcome back to Abby’s Breath of Hope. I’m JC, Abby’s grandfather. Today’s episode touches on some challenging decisions regarding Abby’s ongoing battle for justice and how we’re channeling our efforts into community support to make a tangible difference. Recently, my wife and daughter spent several days speaking with multiple lawyers to assess the feasibility of pursuing a legal case against the hospital and medical staff responsible for the mishandling of Abby's treatment. The consensus was clear: while we certainly have grounds for a lawsuit, the path is fraught with financial and logistical challenges that could ultimately set us back further. The costs associated with fighting this case are staggering. We learned that just securing independent medical assessments could run upwards of $45,000. That's without considering the potential legal fees which, if we lose, would include paying half of the Nova Scotia Health Authority’s hefty lawyer costs. Moreover, the whole legal process could drag on for about seven years, draining our resources and energy with little guarantee of a satisfactory outcome. Even in a best-case scenario, where we might win, the compensation is capped at a maximum of $300,000 due to Canadian laws, which would barely scratch the surface of our expenses accrued over nearly a decade. So, after much discussion and heartache, we've decided against pursuing the lawsuit. It’s a tough pill to swallow, knowing that the individuals responsible for Abby's condition may not face the consequences we believe they deserve. But we're not defeated. Instead, we're redirecting our efforts towards something more positive and immediately impactful. We're focusing on community support, which brings us to some exciting news about upcoming events designed to support not just Abby but others in similar situations. One such event is the Paramedics vs. Firefighters Laser Tag competition scheduled for November 16th, 2024. This fun and spirited event will pit our brave first responders against each other in a friendly contest, with all proceeds going towards Abby’s care. It’s a way for us to bring together the people who are often first on the scene in medical emergencies to help one of their own in a different kind of battle. We're also planning more local events which we'll announce soon. These aren't just fundraisers; they're our way of knitting the community closer, raising awareness about Bronchiectasis, and building a support network that can offer real help to families facing medical crises. Thank you for staying with us, for sharing Abby’s story, and for any support you can offer. Whether it’s participating in an event, sharing this podcast, or contributing to our Go Fund Me page, every bit of support counts. Together, we can ensure that Abby's journey—and the journeys of countless children like her—leads to better outcomes. Until next week, keep hope alive, and remember, together, we’re stronger.
